As of Saturday July 1st, sales tax in all of Los Angeles County is increasing by half a percent to 9.25%. Tied only with Alameda County as the highest county sales tax in the state. However, due to special taxes imposed by certain cities that number grows even higher. The highest sales tax rate of any city currently in California is at 10.25% and the title is held by six cities in the entire state. They are Compton, La Mirada, Long Beach, Lynwood, Pico Rivera, Santa Monica and South Gate. The new rate also happens to be one of the highest, if not tied for the highest, in the U.S. for any city.
With the growing number of measures being passed that increase taxes one can only infer that living in Los Angeles County is becoming more and more expensive. Despite having the largest number of low-income individuals and disadvantaged communities. It seems unfair that the area that has the least must pay the most, at least in the case of sales tax. Never the less, these measure were self-imposed by the voters and as such can not be blamed on politicians who merely asked for these increases. If people truly are outraged by these high, burdensome taxes the solution is simply to stop voting to approve them. There are exceptions such as the gas tax that was just passed by the California state legislature and signed into law by Gov. Brown. In that case the Democratic super-majority in the state assembly and state senate passed the tax without voter approval. Nevertheless the burden must fall on individuals to speak up, talk to friends and neighbors, and convince them not to approve anymore tax increases. If that is in fact how they feel...
It should be noted that La Mirada's Measure I sales tax will sunset in 2018, at which point the sales tax in La Mirada will revert back to 9.25%.
